Almost every bad video call image is a lighting problem wearing a webcam costume. People blame the camera, buy a better one, and look exactly the same — because a webcam sensor is small, and a small sensor in poor light produces a grainy, muddy, badly coloured picture no matter what it cost. Fix the light and a mediocre built-in camera starts looking respectable. Good Zoom lighting is almost never a hardware purchase. The useful part is that you probably already own the light: it is the second screen on your desk.
The single most important quality of a light is its size relative to your face. Big sources wrap around features and produce soft, gradual shadows; small sources carve hard edges. This is why photographers put large softboxes in front of small bulbs, and it is why a 27-inch monitor showing a flat colour is, physically speaking, an excellent softbox that happens to be sitting on your desk already.
It has a second advantage over the obvious purchase. A ring light puts a bright circle in the middle of anyone's glasses and a distinctive doughnut catchlight in their eyes, both of which read instantly as "this person bought a ring light". A screen reflects as a soft rectangular panel — the same thing a window does — which nobody thinks twice about.
Open Zoom Lighting on whichever display sits nearest your camera, then place it off to one side rather than dead centre, angled toward your face. Light coming from a slight angle creates a gentle gradient across your features, which is what makes a face read as three-dimensional. Light straight on flattens everything into a passport photo.
Height matters just as much. Slightly above eye level mimics every natural light source humans have ever lived under, and shadows fall downward the way we expect. Below eye level — a laptop on the desk, screen tilted up — throws shadows upward and looks unsettling for reasons most viewers cannot articulate. If your only spare screen is low, tilt it back and raise it on a stack of books; it is a bigger improvement than any setting on this page.
Watch the framing after you move things. Unless you want a visible coloured glow in shot, the panel should sit just outside the frame edge, close enough to be effective and far enough not to blind you while you work.
Colour temperature describes whether light leans amber or blue, measured in Kelvin. Candlelight lands near 1900K, a warm household bulb around 2700K, a warm room about 3200K, overcast daylight near 5600K, and open shade well above 7000K. Your eyes silently correct for all of it — you never notice a room is orange until you photograph it. A camera does not have that luxury; it makes one white balance guess for the whole frame. So when a warm lamp lights one side of your face and a 6500K screen lights the other, the camera cannot satisfy both, and one half of you goes orange while the other goes blue. The fix is agreement, not correctness: match this tool to whatever light already dominates the room, or switch the competing source off entirely.
Daylight from a window is the strongest source in most rooms during the day, so set 5600K and let the screen fill the shadow side. In the evening under lamps, drop to 2700–3200K and the whole frame stays warm and coherent. The RGB readout tells you exactly what the page is emitting if you want to note a setting and come back to it.
The instinct is to push brightness to maximum, and it is almost always wrong. Set the temperature first, then start low and come up until the shadows under your eyes and chin just soften. Stop there. Past that point you flatten the modelling that makes a face look dimensional, you turn glasses into two bright rectangles, and — because cameras expose for the brightest thing in frame — you make the camera darken everything else until you appear to be sitting in a cave.
Screen size changes the maths. A large monitor at 40% may throw more light than a laptop at 100%, and a phone needs to be close enough that it becomes a hard little source rather than soft fill. If your eyes start to ache during a long meeting, that is the signal to come down; a light that is uncomfortable to sit beside is brighter than the call needs.
Because the light comes from your display and not your video software, this works identically everywhere: Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Webex, Discord, OBS, Loom, or anything recording in a browser. Open your app's preview first so you are judging the real output rather than guessing.
Turn off the fights while you are there. A bright window directly behind you will win against any screen and reduce you to a shape; close the blind or turn around. A ceiling light directly overhead drops shadows into your eye sockets; switch it off and let the screen do the work. Then adjust in small steps — a few centimetres of position usually does more than a large jump on the brightness slider.

Set temperature and brightness first, then open fullscreen so the entire panel emits light with no browser interface breaking it up. Turn on hide-cursor as well: a mouse pointer parked in the middle of your light source is a small dark dot that will absolutely show up in a reflection. To change anything, press Escape, adjust, and go back in.
Desktop browsers handle this straightforwardly. Some mobile browsers present fullscreen differently or keep part of their interface visible; the tool still works as a coloured screen, and you can return to the controls at any time.
Screen lighting is a genuinely good answer for calls, interviews, online teaching, casual streams, and quick recordings. It runs out of road when you need distance, output, or repeatability: anything more than a metre away, any room that needs actual illumination rather than fill, and anything where colour has to match a specification. A dedicated LED panel with diffusion, a stand, and a stated CRI does those things and this cannot.
Until then, this costs nothing, needs no account, and is already sitting on your desk. If you want a neutral source rather than a tuned temperature, use the plain white screen. For a coloured accent behind you rather than light on you, the blue screen and the other colour pages will do it.
